Elvaston Mews

Situated in Elvaston Mews, a prime location in South Kensington, London, McKinley Spaces have restructured an original 19th century stable mews house, transforming it into a clean, contemporary urban living space. The property received a 2013 International Property Award as the best single residential development in London.

In keeping with the local period style, McKinley Spaces has preserved the original façade of the building whilst transforming the remaining structure into a modern, open-plan living space. The simplicity and clean lines of the interior architecture is emphasised by the application of a carefully selected shade of white on all walls, reflecting the light to further illuminate the property during daylight hours. The dominant use of glass and steel further heightens the sense of light and space.

A set of minimal, bespoke suspended steel and glass stairs connect to glass landings on the ground, first and second floors. These striking design features not only allow light to penetrate throughout the property, but also bring a sense of transparency and a feeling of flotation. As well as the staircase, all four levels can be accessed via the cylindrical, vacuum driven pneumatic passenger lift which spans the centre of the building.

McKinley Spaces has focused on interchangeable multi-use spaces designed for modern living. The design team opened up the lower ground floor to dramatically increase space in the main living area. Large, bespoke concrete stairs flow down into the living area, with a full view of an impressive floor-to-ceiling botanical, green wall with a built-in waterfall, bringing nature into the property. LED lights positioned within a concrete step-in pool subtly illuminate this area, creating a warm and serene ambience. All of this can be appreciated from a gently curved, glass internal balcony on the ground floor. Flexible space has been incorporated once more in the bedroom and en-suite bathroom on the ground floor, which could also be used as a spacious home office.

To the other side of the living space sits a minimal design bespoke kitchen behind retractable glass doors, allowing for a fully flexible living space dedicated to cooking, eating and entertaining. Storage is maximised with concealed areas including a pantry and laundry room in a separate area behind the kitchen, as well as a glass paneled wine refrigerator spanning the kitchen backdrop.

The kitchen worktop incorporates a vast slab of Corten steel, creating an industrial aesthetic in stark contrast to the light interior. This dramatic juxtaposition is echoed throughout the house with the implementation of a spectacular Corten Steel bespoke fireplace. This contemporary take on a centralised traditional fireplace unifies the building as it stretches visibly from the living space up to the ground, first and second floors.

An emphasis on multi-purpose living space has also been applied on the first floor in the front two bedrooms, with the installation of pocket folding doors, offering the option of converting the rooms into one large bedroom. Adjacent to this is a large family bathroom with a luxurious sunken bath with shower. The master bedroom en-suite exemplifies the quality of the interior build, with bespoke William Garvey cabinetry and a striking Japanese inspired ‘Geo’ teak bath. Sliding glass doors open onto a contemporary walk-on outdoor glass terrace which funnels natural light down into the basement and onto the green wall below enabling plants to thrive.

On the upper level a spectacular roof terrace has been created through the engineering of an innovative internal steel and glass mezzanine which sits below a retractable glass roof. Accessible by a set of glass stairs, this inspired design feature not only supplements outdoor space but also allows light to penetrate through the building, streaming through the strategically placed glass floors.

A bespoke adjustable car stacker system situated on the ground floor, offers a convenient off road private parking solution with the capacity to accommodate two cars.
